Materials: With Germantown commence in the center of the crown and ch. 3. Join and make 7 s. c. in the ring. Join this round and every round hereafter as follows: Insert hook in both loops of the first s. c. of round, pass wool over and draw through the 3 loops on hook and ch. 1. Turn. Second Round. ---Make a round of s. c., picking up the back part of stitch to form a rib, increasing where necessary in order to keep the work perfectly flat by making 2 s. c. in 1 stitch. Join and turn. Make 2 more rounds same as second round.Fifth Round. ---Draw a loop through first s. c. without passing wool over hook; * pass wool over and draw a loop through same stitch; pass wool over and draw another loop through the same stitch; pass wool over and draw through all 6 stitches on hook and ch. 1; skip 1 s. c., draw a loop through next s. c. and repeat from * around tam. Join and turn. Sixth Round. ---Make a round of s. c., picking up the back part of stitch, decreasing where necessary in order to keep the work perfectly flat by slipping the hook through the back part of 2 stitches and making 1 s. c. Join and turn. Make 3 more rounds of s. c., increasing or decreasing where necessary, according to directions. Tenth Round. ---Same as fifth round. Eleventh Round. ---Same as sixth round. Make 3 more rounds of s. c. Fifteenth Round. ---Same as fifth round. Sixteenth Round. ---Same as sixth round. Make 3 more rounds of s. c. Twentieth Round. ---Same as fifth round. Twenty-first Round. ---Same as sixth round. Make 4 rounds of s. c. without increasing or decreasing. Twenty-sixth Round. ---Make a round of s. c., decreasing 1 stitch every fifteenth stitch. Twenty-seventh Round. ---Same as twenty-sixth round. Twenty-eighth Round. ---Make a round of s. c. without decreasing. Repeat from twenty-sixth to twenty-eighth round twice more, or 3 times in all. Make 4 rounds more same as twenty-sixth round, having from 80 to 90 stitches in last round. With Spanish yarn and steel needles pick up the back part of the s. c. and in each one k. 1 and p. 1, having in all double the number of knitting stitches as there were s. c. in last round. Knit this ribbed band of k. 1 and p. 1 for 1½ inches in depth and bind off loosely. Finish with a pompon placed in the center of the crown as follows: With Germantown ch. 8, join, make 1 round of puffs by inserting hook in first stitch; * pass wool over the hook and around the forefinger of the left hand 3 times; pass the wool up and around the hook; draw all 4 loops on hook through. You now have a group of 5 loops on hook; pass wool over and draw through all; insert hook in next stitch and repeat from * to end of round. Join. Second Round. ---Same as first round. Make 1 round of s. c., increasing where necessary in order to keep the work perfectly flat. Make 2 more rounds same as first round. Break off wool. Sew carefully to the center of the crown of tam o'shanter.
