Men's Golf or Cardigan Jacket Materials 7 hanks 3A gray-mixed Utopia Scotch knitting worsted. Directions Cast 134 stitches on No. 4 bone needles and k. in ribs of k. 1, and p. 1 until the back measures 24 inches. Leave 36 stitches each end for shoulders and bind off the intervening stitches for the neck. Knit each shoulder piece one-half inch deep. Knit one front according to the following directions and then knit the other to correspond. Front.Increase 1 stitch every row at the neck for 33 rows, or 69 stitches on the needle. K. 17 inches and bind off loosely. Sew up underarm seams, leaving an opening of about 16 inches for the armhole. Border Around Jacket.With No. 1 bone needles pick up 272 stitches at bottom of jacket and k. across, decreasing 1 stitch every fourth stitch; then k. back and forth, increasing 1 stitch each end of needle every other row until there are 14 rows, or 7 ridges, and bind off. Pick up every other stitch along the right side of front and k. 7 ridges, increasing 1 stitch every other row at bottom of jacket only. Pick up every other stitch along the left side of front and k. 3 ridges, increasing 1 stitch every other row at bottom of jacket only. In next row k. 7 buttonholes by dividing the spaces equally, and where the buttonholes are to be made bind off 3 stitches, and in next row cast on 3 stitches where the 3 were bound off, which will make a small hole. K. 3 ridges and bind off. Pick up the stitches around the neck in the same way and k. 7 ridges, increasing 1 stitch each end of needle every other row, and bind off. Then sew up the 4 corners. Face the jacket on both sides and around the neck with silk. Work the buttonholes through and sew buttons on the right side. Sleeve.With No. 4 bone needles cast on 123 stitches for top of sleeve. In same rib as jacket k. 1 inch. Turn; * k. 1, p. 1, k. 3 together, rib to within 5 stitches of the end, k. 3 together, p. 1, k. 1. K. 6 rows without decreasing. Repeat from * 5 times more, or 6 times in all. You now have 99 stitches on the needle. K. 9 inches without decreasing. Decrease as before every seventh row until there are 83 stitches on the needle. K. without decreasing until the sleeve measures 18 1/2 inches. Change to steel needles and k. cuff round and round in ribs of k. 2 and p. 2 for 5 inches and bind off. Sew up sleeves and sew them in jacket, putting seam to seam.
